A lamp can do more than light a room. It can set the whole mood. The wide ivory shade takes a bare bulb's glare and turns it soft enough for the last few minutes before you sleep. Switch it on and the tapered base seems to glow from the inside out.

A wide fabric shade balanced on a single tapered column

  • Coolie-shaped shade — a wide, flat cone that spreads light low and wide instead of straight up at the ceiling.
  • Open crown — a small circular opening at the top of the shade lets a little light spill upward too, not just down.
  • Gold-toned collar — a slim collar marks the joint where the shade meets the base, finished with a small knurled screw at one side.
  • Tapered column — the base narrows from a wide foot to a slim neck and stands on a slim darker ring.

The same ivory weave, shade and column

The shade and the column carry the same ivory weave. Up close it is an even plain weave with the slubs left in, so the surface catches lamplight instead of flattening under it. A rolled band caps the column where it meets the collar — a small piece of finishing that is easy to leave out.

Fit and placement

It runs on a cord to a standard wall socket, so choose a spot within reach of one.
