Picture the hush of a paper lantern, redrawn for a modern room. A wide ivory shade, ribbed into soft lobes, carries a grey botanical print in fine, sketch-like lines. Hang it low and a dining table becomes somewhere you linger.

A wide lantern shade with a scalloped hem

  • Ribbed panels — the fabric is drawn into vertical lobes, each split by a fine dark seam from collar to hem.
  • Scalloped hem — every panel dips into a shallow wave, so the bottom edge curves rather than running level.
  • Hand-drawn style floral print — sprays of blossom and leaves cross the ivory fabric, with smaller petal motifs between.
  • Turned wood finial — a walnut-toned ball on a wide flared collar, under a small brass ferrule.

Turned wood over printed fabric

The print runs straight across the panels, so the seams cut through the flowers instead of framing them. The base is left open, bound with a fine stitched edge, with the scalloped skirt below it. Most of the light falls straight down through that opening.

Fit and placement

Have an electrician fit it, or install it yourself if you are comfortable with basic wiring — see the wiring listed in the specifications. Hang it so the opening in the base sits above your sightline when seated beneath it.

Yes. The print is not uniform — dense sprays gather on one side, lighter scattered motifs on the other. It hangs from one cord, so rotate it to suit.

What will people standing above it see?
The print carries over the top of the shade, and an open ring sits around the finial. Worth knowing under a stairwell or mezzanine.

Will the bulb show through the fabric?
Faintly. A soft bright patch appears through the centre panels where the bulb sits. An opal or frosted bulb softens it.
