A traditional Chinese lantern, reworked as a pendant for a modern room. Curved fabric panels bow outward at the middle and draw in at both ends. Fine-line florals run across them in the gongbi ink style. Lit, the blossoms glow through the fabric like a hand-painted screen.

A gourd-shaped shade built from curved fabric panels

  • Gongbi floral print — fine-line floral and leaf motifs sit across the panels, drawn in the Chinese gongbi ink style.
  • Wood cap and bead — a dark turned wood cap closes the top, and a wood bead hangs below on a brass-tone rod.
  • Scalloped hem — the fabric finishes in a soft scalloped edge around the open base, rather than a flat rim.
  • Backlit at night — switched on, the printed lines read as soft shadow against the lit fabric rather than flat surface pattern.

Printed fabric over an internal lantern frame

The floral motif is printed onto the fabric rather than woven in. Vertical seams run between the panels and gather at the neck. An internal metal frame holds each panel in its curve. Dark wood at both ends and brass-tone metal at the base keep the hardware in one warm register.

Fit and placement

This pendant hardwires to a ceiling junction box — it isn't a plug-in fitting. Measure your ceiling-to-tabletop drop before ordering, especially in the largest size. We recommend a licensed electrician for the connection, with the power off at the breaker.
