Brass Wall Light for Hallway, Fluted Column Sconce, 2 Fits
Incl VAT, Free Shipping & Easy Returns.
Details
Fluting is two and a half thousand years old and it has never stopped working, because a ribbed cylinder does something a smooth one cannot.
The head of this sconce is a short fluted column in aged brass. Every rib catches the light at a different angle, so the metal reads as a series of bright and dark lines rather than as one flat surface — the same trick a Doric column plays at architectural scale, shrunk to the size of a fist. Two fittings are offered: a surface-mounted version that stands off the wall, and a recessed one that sits flush into it.
A fluted brass column head, surface or recessed
- Ribs, not a flat face: the flutes break the brass into alternating light and shadow, which is what gives the head depth at any distance
- Aged brass: a warm, slightly darkened finish rather than bright plate — it sits with older ironmongery instead of fighting it
- Two fittings: surface mounted where the wall is finished, recessed where you can cut into it
- Small head, defined beam: a narrow downward pool rather than a general wash
Recessed changes the whole read
Flush in the wall, only the fluted face shows and the fitting disappears into the plaster — it becomes architecture. Surface mounted, it is a piece of hardware you notice. Both are correct; they are different decisions.
Best in a run
Along a corridor or up a stair, evenly spaced, the flutes give each pool a texture that a plain downlight cannot. One on its own is quieter than most people expect.
Brass wants warm light
The 3000 K source is what makes the aged finish read as gold rather than as grey-brown. A cooler bulb would flatten it.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the two fittings?
The surface version mounts onto a finished wall. The recessed version sits flush and needs a cut-out.
Does it light a room?
No. It gives a defined downward pool — use a run of them along a corridor rather than one in a room.
Will the brass darken further?
It is supplied already aged, so it starts where most brass ends up.
