Iron and glass, and nothing else

Iron draws the line — a rod thin enough to read as a pencil stroke, stiff enough to hold the sphere out unaided. At the top it runs straight into the glass, with no collar or cup dressing the joint. The same finish carries from the plate to the tip.

Fit and placement

The plate is the only part that meets the wall; the arm and sphere stand clear. That is what lets it work where a table lamp cannot: over the back of a sofa, beside a reading chair, above a console with no surface to spare.
