A pleated cube that gives a bare bulb something to hide behind. The folds run in bands, so the light leaves the shade in soft horizontal steps. Unlit it is a quiet paper form; lit, it turns into a warm square of light.

Four folded faces, open at the top and at the base

  • Banded folds — the pleats run in horizontal bands, and a diagonal crease cuts across each one.
  • A square opening in the base — centred in the bottom panel, creases ringing it out to the corners.
  • A gathered top — the paper draws in to a small square opening where the cable enters.
  • It folds flat — the pleats stack in on themselves and the cube collapses to a square.

Bonded by hand, seam by seam

Each seam is bonded by hand with paper and glue. The only metal in sight sits at the top rim: small hooks that carry the shade. Switch it on and the grain of the paper comes up through the glow, warm on one face, cooler on the next.

Fit and placement

Bring in a qualified electrician for the install — the wiring is listed in the specifications. It works with a common push switch, not supplied. Centre it over a dining table, or hang it low beside the bed.
