Rice paper over a bamboo frame, on three splayed wire legs. Switch it on and the paper turns warm and even, glowing from the inside. This is ambient light — the kind that gives a corner a centre rather than lighting a task. Unlit, it reads as a quiet paper sculpture.

Cream washi over an internal bamboo-rib frame

  • Rice-paper shade — soft washi, translucent and warm the moment it lights.
  • Bamboo-rib frame — slim ribs run horizontally inside the shade and read as fine ridges across the paper, with a pale seam down one side.
  • Wire handle — a slim handle arches over the top opening, so you lift it by metal, never by paper.
  • Tripod legs — three black-steel legs splay outward, one curving gently before it meets the floor.

Three silhouettes, one height

The three shades share a height and a base, and differ in the line of the shade itself. One flares to a broad, sharply pinched shoulder. One keeps a fuller, rounder body that tapers to the base ring. The third wears a black crown over the shoulder, scalloped along its lower edge and marked with pale circles. Each shade is hand-finished, so no two pieces are quite alike.

Fit and placement

This is a plug-in lamp, not a hardwired fixture, so no electrician is needed. Set the tripod on a flat surface and splay the legs evenly until it sits level. Give the paper room — keep curtains and bedding at least 30 cm (12″) clear.

What kind of light does it give?
A soft, diffused wash through the paper. Treat it as ambient or accent light beside a sofa or a bed, not a reading light.

Will mine look exactly like the photographs?
Close, not identical. The paper tone and the rib spacing shift slightly from piece to piece. Rice paper also mellows with age and sunlight, so keep it out of direct sun.

How do I clean the shade?
Dust gently along the ribs with a soft, dry brush or a feather duster. Never use water, solvents or a sticky lint roller — each one marks the paper permanently. Wipe the rings and legs with a dry microfibre cloth.
