A room can hold plenty of light and still feel flat. This pendant fixes that with shape, not wattage. Its paper column swells and pinches down its whole length, every fold catching the light at a different angle. Lit, it glows the way an old washi lantern does — warm and uneven.

A paper column that swells and pinches down its length

  • Repeating waist — the shade widens and narrows several times over its length, so no two sections catch the light the same way.
  • Rings and short creases — horizontal rings run around the shade, crossed by short diagonal creases that change direction segment by segment.
  • Squared cap and base — the very top and bottom close flat and square, bookending the ripple between them.
  • Fold lines in the glow — lit, every crease reads as a fine dark line across the paper, so the surface never looks flat.

Hand-folded paper held open on a wire frame

A wire frame carries the paper through each waist, so the shade holds its shape without stiffening the folds. It is the hand-folding method behind classic Japanese paper lanterns, drawn out here into one continuous column. Look closely at a lit face and you can count the rings through the paper.

Can I run the cord sideways to a socket?
Yes. The cord leaves the shade, crosses to a small clip on the wall, then drops to the plug. The shade itself hangs plumb.

Will the light look even along the whole column?
No, and that is the character of it. Each fold turns a different way, so bright faces and shaded creases alternate all down the shade.

Will I see the frame through the paper when it is lit?
Yes. The rings that hold the shade open read as fine horizontal lines across the glow. They are part of the look, not a flaw.
