The shape is a storm lantern: a flared metal cap, a wire cage, a bulb inside it and a handle over the top. What has changed is everything behind the glass.
Instead of a wick there is an LED filament tube that looks the part and behaves better — no flame, no fuel, no soot on the cap. A knurled knob on the cap dims it from a low ember up to something you can eat by, and a full charge runs for days rather than hours. Pick it up by the handle and carry it from the table to the step, or hang it off a branch.
