A single paper lantern, drawn out into a slender oval that catches the eye long before the switch goes on. Lit, the mulberry paper glows from within — soft, diffused, the kind of light that settles a room rather than fills it. Hang it alone, where it has room to fall, and let it carry the corner.

An oval drawn to a fine point at both ends

  • Silhouette — the shade swells through the middle, then narrows to a point at the crown and again at the base.
  • Surface — fine horizontal ribbing runs the full height, with faint vertical lines showing through the paper.
  • Crown and cord — a small dark fitting takes the black cord at the top, and a fine loop closes the point below.
  • Lit — the paper reads warm gold around the bulb and pales towards each end.

Mulberry paper, bonded by hand

The paper comes from the inner bark of the mulberry tree, and each shade is bonded by hand, paper and glue. You may find faint traces of glue along the edge of the shade — the mark of a hand-made lantern, not a flaw. Left pale, it turns a bulb into something closer to daylight through a paper screen.

A cable you set to the drop you want

The drop is not settled the day the fixture goes up. The cable adjusts, so you can raise or lower the shade later if the room changes. Give it open space on every side — the shape is the whole design, and it needs room to read.

Can it hang in a bathroom or on a covered porch?
No. This is a paper shade for dry indoor rooms, and steam and damp are the two things it cannot take.

How does it look in daylight, with the light off?
Pale ivory, and the curve still catches daylight along its length. Off, it reads as a shape rather than a lamp, so it holds a corner as well as a ceiling.

Can I hang it alongside other paper lanterns?
Yes. The long oval holds its own next to round paper shades. Leave a gap between them so each silhouette stays clear.
