A small block of stone on the ceiling, and nothing else. It keeps its light inside the block, so what you see is the surface rather than the fitting. The effect is calm, not clinical. Nothing about it competes with the room.

A square well cut into the underside

  • The base is hollowed — a square recess is cut up into the block, narrowing as it rises.
  • A round dome, centred — it sits at the head of the recess and faces straight down, so the light lands directly below.
  • The cap steps back — the wood top is narrower than the stone, so the two meet in a step, not a flush line.
  • Nothing hangs down — the block sits tight against the ceiling, with no rod, chain or cord in the line.

Travertine with the banding left on show

The stone is cut so its layers run level across the faces. Its pores are left open rather than filled, which is what gives the surface depth. Lit, the recess catches the glow first, and the stone itself reads warm rather than luminous.
