A column of paper drums and cones hangs on one slim cord, lit from inside. Switched off, it reads as sculpture. Switched on, it gives a tall, empty wall something to do. Hang it where a landing, an entrance hall or a high corner needs one quiet thing.

A repeating profile of cones, drums and waists

  • One silhouette, stacked — a flared cone tapers into a rounded drum, narrows again, then repeats down the cord on the longer drops.
  • Finely ribbed paper — the shade is scored in close horizontal lines like a traditional lantern, with a soft vertical seam where the panels meet.
  • A brace you only see from below — look up into a tier and one flat strut crosses it, holding the paper open.
  • Tiers that read separately — the stack breaks at every waist, so a long drop looks like shades threaded on a line.

Paper made one shade at a time

Each shade is bonded by hand from mulberry bark paper, so no two are quite the same. Lit, the fibres soften the bulb into the even, golden light of afternoon sun through a shoji screen.

Fit and placement

This one plugs in. It hangs from the ceiling and the cord runs across to a socket, so you need no ceiling box and no electrician. Swagging the cord places the shade away from the ceiling point — over a bedside table, a desk, or a stairwell turn.

Why does my shade show faint lines of glue?
The paper is bonded with glue along each seam, so a light trace there is a mark of the making rather than a defect.

What bulb gives the warmest glow?
