A drum shade gives you one band of light. Stack three and the light comes out in stripes.
This pendant is built from overlapping fabric tiers, each stepping in from the one below it. Between every pair there is a gap, so as well as the broad wash falling onto the table there are horizontal bands of light escaping sideways at three heights. The result is a fitting that is bright underneath and glowing all the way round — which is what a shade half a metre across has to do if it is not going to sit over a table like a lid.

- Source fully hidden: the stepped tiers cap the bulb from every seated angle

Sized for a table, not a corner
Fifty centimetres is a lot of shade. Over a dining table it is right; in a small room or a hallway it will dominate everything under it.
Fabric warms whatever is behind it
Textile diffuses more gently than glass and takes on the colour of the light passing through it. With the warm setting, the whole shade turns the colour of a lit lampshade rather than a lit bulb.
Hang it high enough to see the tiers
Too low and you only see the underside. The stepped construction is the reason to own this, so leave enough drop for it to be read from a seated eye line.
