Up and Down Wall Light for Hallway, Travertine Sconce, 35 cm

A wall light that only points down leaves the top half of the wall dark. This one refuses to choose.

It is a slim rectangular bar of yellow travertine, open at both ends, so light leaves upward and downward at once and the stone itself sits in shadow between the two pools. Travertine has open pores through its whole thickness, which is why the surface catches raking light and reads as stone rather than as render. Two heights, and two ratings: an indoor version, and an IP65 version built for a façade, a porch or a garden wall.

Symmetry is the point

Because the light leaves both ends equally, a pair either side of a door or a mirror reads as architecture rather than as two lamps. That is the arrangement most of these end up in.

Stone against render

On a plain plastered wall the pores are the only texture in the frame, and raking light from the fitting itself is what shows them. Against tile or panelling the effect is quieter.

Choose the rating, not the location

A covered porch still counts as outdoors once rain blows sideways. If the fitting will ever be wet, take the IP65 version — the indoor one is not built for it.
