A column of hand-torn paper, swollen into five soft rounds and pinched to a waist between each one. It answers the problem of harsh overhead light without adding another hard-edged fixture to the room. Stand it in a reading corner for the kind of low, soft-edged light you sit beside rather than under.

  • Stepped silhouette — the shade is widest at the centre and steps down to a smaller round at the top and at the foot.
  • Ribbed skin — fine horizontal lines circle every form, catching light in soft bands rather than one flat sheet.
  • Matte black stand — a slim stem lifts the shade clear of the floor from a low, flat disc.
  • Light that gathers at the centre — lit, the wide middle form burns brightest and the glow softens toward the top and the foot.

Washi paper, torn by hand rather than cut

Each shade is built from sheets of washi rice paper, torn by hand and then layered and bonded — the Japanese Chigiri-e technique. Unlit, that paper reads as one solid white form, dense enough to hold a corner in daylight. Switch it on and the same surface turns translucent, keeping the bulb out of sight behind it.

Fit and placement

This is a plug-in floor lamp, with no wiring to arrange and no electrician to call. Switch it on at the inline switch on the cord. Keep it clear of doorways and busy walkways, since the paper shade is delicate to brush against.

What bulb should I use?
A warm-white LED, around 2700–3000 K, passes through the washi paper as a soft amber-white glow. Skip cool white above 5000 K — it reads harsh and clinical through the paper.

Will my lamp look exactly like the photographs?
Close, but not identical. The paper is torn and bonded by hand, so the layers fall a little differently on every shade. Light glue traces along the shade edges come with that process.

How do I clean the paper shade?
Dust it with a soft, dry brush. Washi paper is not made for water, damp cloths, or spray cleaners. Keep it out of long spells of direct sun, which yellows paper over time.
