A flattened paper dome hand-bonded over a ribbed frame

  • Ribbed shade — close horizontal ribs wrap the paper in even bands, crossed by faint vertical seams from crown to base.
  • Crinkled paper — the surface keeps the soft creases of the hand-bonding, so it catches light rather than sitting flat.
  • Open base — a small metal-rimmed aperture sits at the centre underneath, letting light fall straight down.
  • Clipped crown — the cord fitting carries a wire spreader whose ends clip to the top rim and hold the shade open.

Paper that carries light instead of blocking it

The shade is mulberry paper worked over a bamboo and metal frame. Lit, no bulb shows through: the centre warms to a deep honey while the rims stay softer and darker. Unlit, it reads as a quiet cream sculpture, at home in a bright room or a dim one.

Fit and placement

Have a qualified electrician make the ceiling connection. Hang it low over a dining table so the light falls on the table, not the ceiling. Hang it higher in an open room to soften the whole space.
