Ceiling Spotlight for Hallway, Turned Wood Barrel, 10 cm

Details
Surface-mounted spots are almost always white plastic or brushed steel, which is why ceilings full of them look like an office.
This is the same fitting turned from solid wood. A short barrel, ten centimetres across and seven deep, sitting tight against the ceiling with the source recessed up inside it so nothing glares from below. Oak keeps a pale ceiling pale; walnut puts a deliberate dark point against it. Because there is no cutting involved, it goes where a recessed downlight cannot — a concrete soffit, a rented flat, a ceiling you would rather not open.
A turned solid-wood barrel with the source recessed inside
- Wood, not plastic: a turned barrel with visible grain, so a ceiling full of them reads as considered rather than commercial
- Source set back: recessed inside the barrel, so there is no bright point when you look up at it
- No cutting: surface mounted — it goes on a concrete or finished ceiling with no hole and no void needed
- Two woods: oak to keep a pale ceiling quiet, walnut to punctuate it
Where downlights cannot go
Concrete soffits, rented flats, ceilings with no void above them. Anywhere a recessed fitting means structural work, a surface barrel is the only honest answer.
A run reads better than a scatter
Spaced evenly along a corridor or above a worktop, these become a rhythm. Dotted around a room they look like an afterthought — the same rule as any spot.
Small pool, on purpose
Ten centimetres of aperture gives a defined circle rather than a wash. Use several, or pair one with something ambient.

Frequently asked questions
Does it need a hole in the ceiling?
No. It is surface mounted, which is why it works on concrete and in rented flats.
Can I see the source from below?
No. It is recessed up inside the barrel.
How many for a hallway?
Enough to space evenly along it. A single spot mid-ceiling leaves both ends dark.
