Details

The sputnik shape has survived seventy years because it does something no shade can: it puts light at several heights at once.

Arms radiate from a central hub at different angles, each ending in a turned wooden cup that holds its lamp. Because the arms are set at varying pitches, the sources sit at different heights, and the light in the room comes from a scatter of points rather than one plane. The frame is black or white; the cups are timber, which is what stops the whole thing reading as mid-century pastiche. Three, five, six or eight lamps.

Angled arms from a central hub, each tipped in turned wood

  • Sources at several heights: the arms sit at different pitches, so the light comes from a scatter of points rather than a flat ring
  • Wooden cups: turned timber at each arm end, which warms a shape that is usually all metal
  • Four sizes: three lamps for a hallway, eight where the fitting has a table under it
  • Black or white frame: black to draw the geometry against a pale ceiling, white to let it recede

Count the lamps against the room, not the budget

Three arms is a small fitting and reads as a light. Eight is a chandelier and becomes the centre of the room. The jump between them is bigger than the price difference suggests.

Bulbs are part of the design

The cups hold the lamps in plain sight, so what you fit is visible from every seat. Matched bulbs in matched cups is what makes this look deliberate.

Give it clearance

The arms spread wide. Measure the reach against the table below and the walls beside it before choosing the larger configurations.
