Wood Slat Pendant Light for Kitchen Island, Matte Black Cord

Switch on a bare pendant bulb and you get glare where you wanted warmth. This one sits inside a fan of wood strips, so the light comes out through the gaps instead of in one hard spot. The wood warms it on the way. It reads as a sculpture and still works as a light.

A fan of curved wood strips around an exposed bulb

• Radial wood strips — Long tapering strips notch into a pale wooden ring at the centre of the shade.
• Black hardware against the wood — A domed black canopy and cord hold the shade, with a black lamp holder at the centre.
• An open, glowing centre — The gaps between the strips leave the bulb in view, so the glow reads through the wood itself.
• A collar above a wide flare — The strips rise into a short upright collar at the top, then sweep out into a low, wide skirt.

Notched at the top, stepped into a crown

Look at the shade from the side and the top of each strip carries a small notch. Lined up, those notches make a stepped crown around the cord. Follow one strip down and it bows outward, then turns under at the rim. Lit, the strips nearest the bulb glow amber while the outer ones stay matt.

Fit and placement

The ceiling fitting in the gallery comes with it. Hang it so the rim sits just above your eye line, and you look at lit wood rather than into the bulb. Have an electrician fit it, or install it yourself if you're comfortable with basic wiring — it's a straightforward job.

Frequently asked questions

Which bulb suits it best?
The photographs use a clear filament lamp, whose long glass tube lines up with the vertical gaps at the collar. A warm tone sits better against the wood than a cool one.

How does the light fall?
Down and outward at once. Some leaves through the gaps between the strips; the rest drops straight through the open underside onto the surface below.

How do I keep the wood clean?
Run a dry cloth or a soft brush along the strips rather than across them, and leave the wood dry afterwards.
