Two materials carry the lamp: a wood block and a fabric shade, joined by that short collar. The block is cut square and left plain apart from the channel down its front. The shade is open underneath, so light drops onto the surface below as well as through the fabric.

Fit and placement

This light plugs into an ordinary socket — no wiring, nothing to mount. The shade reaches well past the block on both sides, so measure for the shade rather than the base. It sits well on a nightstand, a desk corner, or a shelf beside books and frames.
