One upright cylinder of natural alabaster, held in a brass collar on a short arm off a round brushed-brass backplate — that is the whole fixture, and at 8 cm (3.1″) across and 27 cm (10.6″) tall it is barely larger than your hand. Switched on, the stone glows through and the light lands soft and slightly golden on the wall around it; switched off, the brushed brass and the pale stone read as a quiet piece of hardware rather than a lamp. It is an accent light for a hallway, a bedside wall or a stair landing, not a room's main source.

What makes it work

  • Natural alabaster shade — a solid cylinder of stone rather than moulded glass, so the light comes through warm and diffused and the veining is unique to your sconce.
  • Brushed brass hardware — backplate, arm, top ring and collar in brass with a soft brushed sheen, closed with a small knurled thumbscrew.
  • Compact footprint — 8 cm (3.1″) wide and 27 cm (10.6″) tall, so it fits the narrow walls a larger fitting would crowd.

Alabaster is a natural material

Because the shade is cut from stone rather than moulded, the tone and the veining shift from one piece to the next and from the photographs. That variation is the material behaving as it should.

Wiring and control

This is a hardwired fixture rather than a plug-in one: it connects to the wall box and runs from a standard wall switch, supplied separately. Have an electrician make the connection if you'd rather not touch the wiring, or fit it yourself if you're comfortable with basic wall wiring — it's a straightforward single-fixture job.
