A turned column is one of the oldest things a woodworker makes, and it is still the reason a plain lamp can hold a room.

This one stacks four spheres on a slim spindle above a solid disc foot, cut from a single length of wood so the grain runs continuously up through every curve. Above it sits a wide linen drum that throws light down onto the table and up onto the wall in equal measure. Choose walnut for depth against pale walls, or natural oak when the room is already dark. It is a proper bedside lamp — tall enough to read by, heavy enough to stay where you put it.

The shade is unbleached linen and the source is a warm 3000 K, so what lands on the wood is the colour that flatters it. A cool bulb makes walnut look grey; this does not.
