This one has no cable at all. A wide brushed disc sits on a slim wire-drawn stem above a weighted round base, and the whole thing charges from a lead you unplug afterwards. Touch the top to switch it on, hold to dim it anywhere between a whisper and full brightness, tap through three tones of white. Put it on a nightstand, then move it to a windowsill, a bath edge or an outdoor table without thinking about where the plug is.

The light comes down, not out
The disc is solid on top and open underneath, so the LED throws light onto the table and up the wall rather than into your face. On a nightstand that means you can read next to someone who is asleep.
Weight in the base, not the shade
The base is the heaviest part by some distance. It takes a knock from an elbow or a duvet without going over, which is the failure mode of most slim lamps.
One lamp, several rooms
Because nothing tethers it, the same lamp does bedside on a weeknight and dinner table on a Saturday. Two of them either side of a bed still need no wiring.
