Unlit, it reads as a pale stone cup — matte, faintly clouded, closer to cream than to white — held on a slim brass bar that steps out from a round brass backplate. Switched on, the whole cup turns amber and the veining surfaces from inside the stone, throwing a soft pool of light onto the wall around it rather than a hard beam. It is small on purpose: 31 cm (12.2″) tall and 12 cm (4.7″) across, so a pair will flank a bed or a mirror, and a run of them will light a hallway, without any one of them taking over the wall.

What makes it work

  • One piece of natural alabaster — the shade is cut from quarried stone rather than moulded, so it glows from within and the clouding in yours belongs to your fixture alone.
  • Brass arm and round backplate — the arm carries the cup clear of the wall and the plate covers the outlet box, both in a brushed brass that warms under the light.
  • Standard candelabra socket — one E12 or E14 bulb, sold everywhere, so the warmth and brightness stay your choice.

Worth knowing before you order

  • It is hardwired. The backplate fixes over a wall outlet box, so there is no cord and no plug.
  • It is rated IP20, which carries no moisture protection at all. Dry indoor rooms only: a bedroom, hallway or living room rather than a bathroom or a covered porch.
  • The bulb is not included, and dimming depends on the bulb and switch you pair rather than on the fixture.
  • Alabaster is quarried stone, so the colour and clouding of your shade will read a little differently from the photographs.
