It stands on the floor. No table, no shelf, no surface of any kind — 160 cm (63 in) of slim metal stem rising from a round weighted base, put down wherever the room has space rather than wherever the furniture allows. That height is the whole point: sit down beside it and the light arrives from above your shoulder rather than from beside your elbow, which is the one thing a lamp on a side table never quite manages. The two quarter-sphere shades turn by hand around an outer metal ring, riding over two fixed inner cylinders, and they hold wherever you leave them — closed for a tight pool to read by, open for a glow the whole corner sits in. It is metal throughout: shades, cylinders, ring, the slim stem and the base. What makes it work

• Two shades that aim the light — Rotate the quarter-spheres by hand to send the light down onto a chair, up a wall, or out across the room. There is no motor and no app, so there is nothing to pair, update or eventually stop working — and they hold their position once you set them.
• Free-standing, and weighted for it — It claims its own patch of floor beside an armchair or behind a sofa, and the round base carries the weight low, so it holds its ground when you swing a shade across.
• Nothing else to buy — Bulbs are included, you pick the plug type on this page, and the lamp accepts AC 110–240 V. Everything it needs to switch on arrives with it.

The one that needs no surface

Three versions of this design sit side by side at Clérachic, all with the same pair of hand-turned shades, and the difference between them is where the light has to live. The 30 cm (11.8 in) rechargeable table lamp is the one that travels — cordless, with an integrated LED, made to be carried from the dinner table to the balcony to the bedside. The 50 cm (19.7 in) plug-in table lamp is the one that holds a sideboard or a console, mains-powered through a 2 m (6 ft 7 in) cord and taking an E14 bulb. Both of them still need something to stand on.

This one does not. It is 110 cm (43.3 in) taller than the 50 cm (19.7 in) lamp, which is the difference between an object on the furniture and an object that is furniture. Take it when the corner you want to light has an armchair in it and nothing to set a lamp on, when the sofa floats away from the wall, or when a reading spot has never had a light of its own. Take one of the table lamps instead if you already have the surface and only want to fill it.

Plug, voltage and bulbs — settled before it ships

Most floor lamps arrive as a partial object: the right plug if you are lucky, and an empty socket waiting for a bulb you still have to go and find. This one is chosen complete. Pick your plug — US, EU, AU or UK — from the options on this page, and that is the plug that comes fitted to the cord. The lamp is rated for AC 110–240 V, which spans household mains on either side of the voltage divide, so the same lamp works whether the wall behind it delivers 110 V or 240 V. Bulbs are included. The fitting is the standard E26/E27 screw base rated to a maximum of 40 W, so when a replacement is eventually needed it is the ordinary kind, not a proprietary part you have to order back from us.

The switch is on and off

Control sits inline on the cord — a switch you can find with a hand without crouching behind the base or feeling around under the shades in the dark. It is on and off, and that is all it is. This lamp has no dimmer of its own, so if you want to lower the light, that is a job for a dimmable bulb within the 40 W rating together with a separate dimmer. We would rather tell you that here than have you order it and go looking for a control that was never fitted.

Where it can stand, and how far the cord reaches

The rating is IP20, which means indoors and dry: a living room, a bedroom, a landing, a study corner. Not a bathroom, not a covered terrace, not anywhere it can be rained on or sit in steam. The cord is 2 m (6 ft 7 in) and fixed, so measure from the spot you have in mind to the nearest socket before you order — that reaches comfortably along a wall or behind a sofa, but it will not cross an open floor. The height is fixed at 160 cm (63 in) as well — there is no telescopic stem to raise or lower.

Available finishes

Brass and Chrome carry one finish across the whole fixture, shade and frame together, so the piece reads as a single material standing in the room. Black & Brass and White & Chrome split it: a coloured shade over a metal frame, which keeps the head visually lighter against a pale wall. Polished chrome and gloss white bounce more light back into a room; matt black holds it closer and reads moodier once the room goes dark. Brushed brass sits between the two, and hides fingerprints better than the polished finishes do — worth knowing on a lamp this tall, where the stem is at hand height every time you walk past.

This is the floor lamp. It stands on the floor at 160 cm (63 in) and needs no surface at all. The other two in the family are table lamps — the 30 cm (11.8 in) cordless one and the 50 cm (19.7 in) plug-in one.

Do bulbs come with it, and can I dim the light?
