This is the plug-in one

Worth being direct about, because it is the one thing people get wrong when they compare the two. The 30 cm (11.8 in) version is the cordless one: a built-in rechargeable battery, an integrated LED, made to be carried from room to room. This is not that lamp. This one stands 50 cm (19.7 in) tall, takes an E14 bulb, and runs from the mains through a 2 m (6 ft 7 in) cord. There is no battery in it, so there is nothing to charge and nothing that runs flat mid-dinner — and, equally honestly, it needs a socket within reach of that cord. Measure from the spot you have in mind to the nearest socket before you order: 2 m (6 ft 7 in) reaches along most sideboards and across most console tables, but it will not cross an open room.

Choosing between the two: plug-in or cordless

Two versions of this lamp sit side by side at Clérachic, and choosing between them is simpler than it looks. Take the 30 cm (11.8 in) cordless version if the light needs to travel — a balcony at dusk, a dinner table with no socket near it, a bedside shelf that was never wired for it.

It plugs into the mains, stands 20 cm (7.9 in) higher, carries 2.82 kg (6.2 lb) of metal so the base holds its ground, and takes a standard E14 bulb rather than an integrated LED, so the light is yours to change later. The bulb and the switch

The fitting is E14, the small screw base. You can run an incandescent bulb up to 40 W, or an LED up to 6 W, and a 5–6 W LED gives you around 470 lumens.

The rocker switch sits inline on the cord rather than underneath the base, so you can reach it without feeling around in the dark. It is on and off. The lamp has no dimmer of its own — lowering the light is a job for a dimmable LED bulb within the 6 W rating plus a separate dimmer. We would rather tell you that now than have you look for a control that is not there.

What the light is for

Around 470 lumens is an atmospheric level — a sideboard, a hallway, a console behind a sofa, the corner of a room you want to soften after dark. It is not a bright task lamp for close, detailed work. The shades are solid metal, so the light leaves through the openings you set rather than glowing through the shade.

Available finishes

The cord colour is matched to the frame, so the run down to the socket reads as part of the piece instead of an afterthought trailing off the back. Polished chrome and gloss white bounce more light back into the room; matt black holds it closer and reads moodier once the room goes dark. Brushed brass sits between the two, and hides fingerprints better than the polished finishes do.
