Some pendants shout for attention. This one settles a room instead — a wide, rounded paper shade that tapers to a narrow point overhead. It glows evenly from within rather than throwing one hard beam. Hang it low and it becomes the room's quiet centrepiece.

Close up, the paper is ribbed and faintly lined

  • Horizontal bands — close ribs wrap the shade from crown to base and sit slightly proud beneath a smooth paper surface.
  • Faint vertical lines — pale lines run top to bottom at even spacing, crossing the bands.
  • A low, full waist — the shade reaches its widest point well below the middle, then turns in to the base.
  • Open underside — the base is left open, so light drops straight down as well as through the paper.

Hand-pasted, so no two shades match exactly

Cotton paper is pasted by hand onto a frame of fine bamboo ribs. Those ribs show faintly through the paper once the bulb is lit. Expect small differences in paper texture and paste lines between one shade and the next. Lift the pendant by its fitting, never by the paper.

Fit and placement

Fitting it is a ceiling job, so a licensed electrician is recommended. The cord can be shortened during installation. Hang one shade low over a round table. Or pair the small and large at staggered heights, as they are shown above the dining table and the staircase landing.

Why does it need an LED bulb?
The bulb hangs inside a paper shade. LED bulbs run cool to the touch. Incandescent and halogen run hot enough to scorch or burn paper, so they must not be used.

How do I keep the paper shade clean?
Dust it with a soft, dry brush only. Skip water, cleaning sprays and vacuum suction — water spots the paper and suction can pull it.
