A paper lantern changes a room quietly. Switch this one on and the light comes back warm and low through the paper. The shade reads as a lantern; the wire base almost disappears beneath it. Put it where you already sit — beside the chair you read in.

Rice Paper Floor Lamp

A ribbed lantern shade on a bare wire base

  • Fine horizontal ribbing — the paper rings the shade in narrow bands, collar to base.
  • A wire loop at the crown — a slim rectangular loop stands above the top ring, like a lantern's carrying handle.
  • Flat collar rings — one ring closes the top of the shade, a second meets the frame below it.
  • Three splayed legs — slender black metal, set wide, each finishing in a small rounded foot.

Two sizes, two silhouettes

The size you choose decides the shape. Akari 10A is the wide, squat oval, and the shade sits low and broad over the base. Akari 14A is the tall column, swelling below the collar and tapering all the way to the foot. Read the two side by side in the specifications.

Fit and placement

Nothing bolts down and nothing wires into a wall. A cord runs from the base to an ordinary socket, so the lamp goes wherever a plug reaches. Stand it beside a sofa, in a reading corner, or by the bed.

Frequently asked questions

Will the bulb show through the paper?
Yes. Lit, it reads as a bright core near the middle of the shade, and the glow spreads out from there to the collar rings.

Does it have to stand against a wall?
No. The base stands on its own, so the lamp works out in the room as easily as it does in a corner.

Is the paper the same white in both sizes?
Yes. White is the only colour listed, and it is the same for either size.
