A fabric dome that takes the glare out of an overhead bulb. Once it is lit, the weave shows its slubs and its stitched ribs. The light lands warm and low over your table. The room draws in around it after dark.

Two hems cut from the same ribbed dome

  • Swept hem — one shade is cut low on one side and high on the other, the raw edge bound in a whipstitch lacing.
  • Pleated hem — the other shade is fuller and level, finished all the way round in a gathered flounce.
  • Stitched ribs — fine grey lines run from the wood cap to the hem on both shapes, like a furled parasol.
  • Open slat band — under each hem sits a row of narrow slats, visible whether the lamp is on or off.

The shade is stitched, not moulded

The dome is built from fabric panels, and each seam is picked out as a fine grey rib. At the crown the panels gather into a wood cap, which also carries the cord. The swept edge is left raw and closed with a whipstitch that shows. Nothing here is hidden or pressed flat.

Fit and placement

This one is hardwired: the flex runs straight into the ceiling box, so book an electrician for the fitting. It switches from the wall, not from the fixture. Hang it over a dining table or a kitchen island, where the swept hem sits near eye level.
