Inspired by the Japanese Akari lantern tradition that took shape in 1951, the Xuanzhi table lamp wraps a handmade mulberry-paper shade around a warm, even light. Much like the fishermen's bamboo-and-paper lanterns that first inspired the form, it brings a calm, glowing presence to whatever space you place it in.
The original lanterns were made by fishermen to draw fish in — bamboo ribs covered with fine paper. Here the shade is mulberry-tree paper, chosen because it softens the light and spreads it gently and evenly.
Features
-
Mulberry paper shade — handmade washi paper softens the light into a gentle, even glow, using the same technique found in traditional Japanese lanterns.
-
Eight sizes — from compact (∅10.2") to statement-scale (∅33.1"), there's a proportion for every space and surface.
-
Plug-in — a 59" cord with an inline on/off switch lets you place it anywhere, no hardwiring needed.
Glue traces at the shade edge — a normal handcraft characteristic
The shade is built through a careful hand-bonding process using paper and glue. Minor glue traces along the edge of the shade are a natural result of that handwork — a sign of how it's made, not a quality issue.

Frequently asked questions
Why are there glue traces at the edge of the shade?
The shade is handmade through a paper-and-glue bonding process. Minor glue traces along the edge are a normal characteristic of that handcraft — not a quality issue.
How do I connect the wires?
Connect the black wire to hole 2 and the white wire to hole 3. See the wiring diagram in the setup section above.
What is the shade made from?
Handmade mulberry paper (washi). It softens light into a gentle, even glow — the same material used in traditional Japanese lanterns. Handle with care and keep away from direct moisture.
Is this plug-in or hardwired?
Plug-in. It comes with a 59" cord and an inline on/off switch — just plug it into any outlet.
