Arch Wall Light for Bedside, Opal Diffuser Sconce, 49 cm

A blank wall beside your bed or mantel rarely gets a second look. This one earns it. A slim metal arch drops around a long opal capsule, and the two hold each other in balance. Switch it on and the wall stops being background.

An arch that hangs from one post rather than rising from the wall

• The arch — a slender inverted-U hangs from one short post on the disc, its legs dropping past the capsule to the collar.
• The collar — a wide metal cuff clamps the capsule across its middle, a squared lug on each side taking the end of a leg.
• The capsule — straight-sided opal, closed by a full dome at the top and another at the foot.
• The plate — a single round disc with a softly bevelled edge is all that meets the wall.

The band splits the glow into two lobes

Lit, the cuff divides the surface in two — one lobe above the band, one below. Each is brightest against the metal and softens towards its dome, so the wall takes a graded pool rather than a hard edge. No hot spot shows through the opal at any point along its length.

Fit and placement

Mount it at eye level beside a headboard, a mirror or a mantel. The shallow depth listed in the specifications suits a narrow wall run — a pier between two windows, or the strip beside a doorway. It holds its own against plaster, wood panelling and deep paint.

Frequently asked questions

Should I hang one or a pair?
A single suits one side of a bed or a mantel. Two at matching height give you symmetry either side of a fireplace.

Which finish should I choose?
Black settles into wood panelling and darker paint. Brass lifts off plaster and pale walls, and picks up the warmth around it.

Will it sit on a panelled wall?
Yes. The round disc wants a flat field, so centre it on a panel rather than across a moulding.
