Wood Wall Light for Bedside, Walnut Curved Arm Sconce, Layered Shade

A wall light that swings out is useful. One that swings out on a piece of solid timber is furniture.

The arm here is a single curve of wood, cut so the grain follows the bend, carrying a shade built in two overlapping tiers. The tiers matter: the upper one caps the source completely and the lower one narrows the spill, so what reaches the wall is a defined downward wash rather than a halo. Walnut reads dark and warm against pale plaster; natural oak almost disappears into it. Three light tones, chosen at checkout.

A curved solid-wood arm carrying a two-tier shade

• Grain follows the curve: the arm is shaped from solid timber rather than bent ply, so the figure runs with the bend
• Two overlapping tiers: the upper caps the source, the lower narrows the spill — a defined wash, not a halo
• Reaches away from the wall: the arm projects, so the light lands on a book rather than on the plaster behind your head
• Two woods, three tones: walnut or oak, and warm through cool white

A reading light that is not an anglepoise

Most bedside wall lights are jointed metal with a visible mechanism. This gives you the reach without the hardware, which is the reason it works in a bedroom rather than a study.

Wood against plaster

On a plain painted wall, timber is the only warm thing in the frame. It is what stops a wall fitting reading as something the electrician chose.

Height matters more than side

Fit it so the bottom of the shade sits just above shoulder height when you are sitting up. Too high and the wash lands behind you.

Frequently asked questions

Does the arm move?
No. The curve is fixed — the reach is built into the shape rather than into a joint.

Can I read by it?
Yes. The shade aims a defined wash downward, which is what puts light on a page rather than on the wall.

Which wood against white walls?
Walnut, if you want the fitting to read. Oak if you would rather it disappeared.
