This ceiling fan hangs from a short downrod and wires directly into a ceiling outlet box rated for a fan. With the power off and a helper to hold the motor, the job usually takes under an hour.
Before you start
- Mounting: the bracket fixes to a ceiling outlet box rated to carry a fan; a box made only for a pendant may not take the weight and the movement of a fan in use.
- Weight: the fan weighs 8 kg (17.6 lb), so the box and the joist or brace behind it must be secure before you begin.
- Ceiling height: the blades should clear the floor by at least 2.1 m (6.9 ft) and sit well clear of walls, shelves and cupboard doors.
- Size: check the blade span, 132 cm (52″) or 152 cm (59.8″), against the room so the blades turn freely.
- Power: the fan is hardwired to your mains supply, AC 90–260 V.
Tools you may need
- Screwdriver
- Voltage tester
- Wire strippers
- Wire nuts or terminal connectors (supplied)
- Step ladder
- A helper to hold the motor while you connect it
Installation
1. Switch off the power
Turn the circuit off at the consumer unit or breaker panel and test at the ceiling outlet with a voltage tester. The wall switch alone does not make the wiring safe.
2. Fit the mounting bracket
Screw the supplied bracket to the ceiling outlet box, just as you would for any fan. Check it is level and firmly fixed: a fan that is not square to the ceiling will wobble once it turns.
3. Assemble the downrod
Feed the fan wires up through the downrod and the canopy, then secure the rod to the motor housing with the supplied pin and clip. Tighten every screw before the fan goes up.
4. Hang the fan
Lift the motor and seat the ball at the top of the downrod in the bracket, so the fan hangs on its own while you work. Ask your helper to steady it.
5. Connect the wiring
- Live to live: black, brown, or the terminal marked L
- Neutral to neutral: white, blue, or the terminal marked N
- Earth to earth: green, green-and-yellow, or bare, to the earth terminal or screw
Connect the fan's wires to the ceiling wires, secure each connection, and fold the wiring neatly into the box so nothing is trapped as the canopy goes up.
6. Fit the canopy and the blades
Raise the canopy to the ceiling and fix it with the screws provided. Fit the three wooden blades to the motor, tightening each blade screw a little at a time in turn so the blades sit evenly.
7. Restore power and test
Switch the circuit back on, pair the remote control (and the app, on the remote and app version) as the instructions in the box describe, and run the fan through its speeds. If it wobbles, switch off and check that every blade screw is tight.
Important tips
- Confirm the outlet box is secure and rated for a ceiling fan of this weight before mounting.
- Follow the wiring rules that apply where you live, and call a qualified electrician if anything is unclear.
- Switch the fan off and let the blades stop before cleaning; wipe the wood with a dry, soft cloth.
- Check the blade and downrod screws once a season: a fan in daily use can loosen them over time.
- If anything about the fan or the wiring is unclear, email info@clerachic.com and a person will answer you.
